Brag about it in our new Brag Bar

Yesterday, we went ahead and created a new sub-forum to the Squeeze Bar. We called it the Brag Bar.

So what is the Brag Bar you ask? Simple… a place to brag about your work! You create a really cool app? Brag about it! You think you’ve finally got your head around creating a really nice logo and you’re proud of it? Brag about it!

It’s also great to see what other members are working on and get inspired by it.

So what are you waiting for! Get over there and show us your stuff!

Happy Birthday The Web Squeeze!

TWS Birthday CakeToday is a special day. It’s not special in the way that Internet Explorer is a “Special” browser, it’s not special because it’s Friday the 13th (although that black cat in the corner sharpening a knife does do special things to ones nerves), in fact, it’s not even the pixelated, animated love hearts images flying through in-boxes for Valentines Day that makes it special. Today is special, spectacular, stupendous because it is The Web Squeeze’s FIRST BIRTHDAY!

Only a Herculean effort of willpower has prevented some excitement induced celebration ideas to be rejected. Some of these include:

  • Blasting MIDI versions of Happy Birthday to your browser with the delightfully underused BGSOUND tag
  • Removing the entire site and replacing it with a flash movie of a dancing strawberry
  • Linda and Karinne squeezing litres and litres of fresh fruit juice and having Jacob deliver a glass to each The Web Squeeze member personally
  • Adding the [ you ] tag to every thread ever created

Now now, don’t let the rejection of these ideas disappoint you as we’ve got a much better idea to celebrate breaking out of our infantile roots. We’ve come up with a competition.

You’re funny and we want attention so go and create a video of you wishing us a happy birthday! You can be standing on your head, you can send video of a claymation potato singing “For The Squeeze Is A Jolly Good Website”, you can even just say happy birthday in your native accent to amuse the lesser traveled members, just make it funny and make us feel special by saying:

“HAPPY BIRTHDAY THE WEB SQUEEZE!”

It’s simple!  Here’s all you have to do…

  • Make a funny video wishing us a happy birthday!
  • Upload the video to our Vimeo group!
  • Post a link to the video in the comments below!

Version 2.5 … almost done

After a few late nights trying to get everything up and running, we’ve finally went ahead and put 2.5 live even tho it’s not entirely done yet. I would say it’s about 90% ready. Some of you may think “Why the heck are you releasing it if it’s not done? That’s stupid!”. There’s 2 major reasons for that.

New index content display

After giving the previous index display a try, we’ve decided to revert back to the good ol’ list with the “Older” and “Newer” links at the bottom. We’ve had a few people commented that they couldn’t access the recent archived articles quickly without going through each categories. And the way we had it previously with the 5 entries at the bottom without images, it made them look less important. Something we do not want. So we brought back the list on the index page.

And with that came the “Older/Newer” navigation links at the bottom. They look like this for now but they’ll be styled a bit differently in the coming days.

Change in article view

The second major design change is in the article view. At the end of each article we’ve added links to major social media services. These are an important aspect of every magazine/blog/resource site like ours and the bulk of our traffic comes from these sites… so yes… they’re important.

And we also added a box to entice people to subscribe to our RSS feed easily. Since we plugged it through FeedBurner, we noticed a nice steady increase in our subscribers so we want to make sure that new traffic can easily stay in touch.

Still to come

With that we still have a few non-esthetic tidbits left to add: Archives and About pages and sub-categories showing in category pages. Not sure why we never had an About page before but they’ll be one soon. And we also have a few purely esthetic fixes that need to be done and that will come in time. The functionality of the site that we were looking for is there and that’s the important part.

We hope you like what we have so far and, please, do not hesitate to let us know what you think! We love to have feedback from our readers.
