Broadband Speed Increase

I have my Broadband through UPC, which used to be NTL (a television cable company) here in Ireland. I went on to there website the other day and noticed that my package of 3mb could be upgraded free of charge (agreeing means a new 12 month contract). Anyway, I opted for this and got confirmation this evening that the upgrade was complete. I was told to reboot my cable modem before the change took place.

I chacked out speedtest.net before reboot, 3.1mb, after reboot 8.85mb, this was at 7.30 on a fri evening. So I checkd again a few mins ago, 9.45mb.

How reliable is speedtest.net??

So Mugabe kills rigs an election which he clearly lost badly. He then forces a re-run. During this time he viciously attacks and kills many people who voted against him. He spread fear around his country. During his time in power he has made money worthless, he has destroyed the farming infrastructure. He has taken a stable and moderately wealthy country - in African terms - and driven it into the ground. He has received world wide condemnation for his actions.

What does England do? Takes away his honorary Knighthood and stops them from playing Cricket... does anyone else find this response completely inappropriate?

Hi!

Getting the obvious out of the way... yes, i am from space and yes i am a dog and yes my name is bobby. I am a good judge of character, yet sometimes confuse characters with characters in the code. Is it so strange to have a conversation with the code? You try coming from a really different place and see if you don't wind up talking to a piece of ascii. And yes, ascii is much different where i come from.

Thanks!

b

p.s I think it would be a good usability improvement to strong align the 'post new topic' and 'preview post' with the left side of the copy text... centering is always tempting, but generally creates more eye looking around then neceserarry... studies were done where I came from that showed when things line up with other things on the space you are looking at, naturally your eyes find them easier. while when something is placed in a space that doesn't align with anything we find it a challenge to locate.

Its just been a theme recently where I find myself looking for the most obvious thing on the page... like a downloading site and the last thing I see is 'download file' in some small icon randomly placed somewhere.

I was looking at a comment added to the tutorial I wrote for jQuery last weekend http://www.thewebsqueeze.com/articles/intr...pt-library.html

And was suprised to find that there was a link to an Italian site that has reused my examples in a summarised tutorial -- the re use is not malicious nor theft as there are constant references that I was the original author. I just thought it was quite funny that my tutorial was rewritten (not translated, actually rewritten and reflected on) in another language.

One of the lines I used in my tutorial

QUOTE

<LI>I didn’t want using the framework to feel like learning a new language entirely (as you’ll see, the only way jQuery would feel like using another language would be if you did not speak English)

My assumption is that not everyone in Italy speaks English -- I hope I didn't scare too many people away from jQuery because of this...

Have a look at the foreign equivalent of my tutorial here.

http://cssblog.it/2008/06/26/introduzione-...ualche-esempio/

Hi,

I was wondering if an e-mail alert for new tutorials or news could be done for the site. I am on here most days, but sometimes it would be nice to know if there is a new tutorial, or news or the likes. Maybe it is here already. Something like interested peolpe would register for the alerts.

I tried posting in "Implemented Suggestions", but was stopped from starting a new thread.

It sjust an idea.

Strange Rankings

I'm getting shockingly good rankings in broad searches, but strangely not doing much better in more specific ones. I'd like to know why that is.

My site is called the Badminton Bible. Here's an example; look at these two search results:

badminton serve technique -- ranked 6 out of 154,000

serve technique -- ranked 8 out of 22,900,000 (!)

And here's another one:

badminton doubles tactics -- ranked 4 out of 111,000

doubles tactics -- ranked 7 out of 10,600,000

What the bejeezus is going on? Do I just need to use the word "badminton" a few more times in my text? I'm aware this could be an issue, but can it really have that much influence?

The strange thing is that I'm thrashing my direct competitors in the really difficult rankings, but losing to them on the easy ones.

Creating A Global Mute Button?

I have a container Flash movie that loads in other swf files. Some of these have videos, sounds etc loaded in different ways from simply embedded to sound objects etc.

However what I need to add to the "holder" movie is a mute button that works across the board - ie it just puts the volume to 0, but doesn't stop anything. I will also of course need "unmute" capability.

I can't find anything helpful online. stopAllSounds doesn't work, and I can't use setVolume as it's not for specific objects. Surely there must just be a "global" volume functionality?

Any help would be much appreciated.

Hi,
Ive been trying to figure out how to do something like an image/content scroller such as this one: http://www.northpoint.org/home . Its the thing right under the happening now. Ive had several chances to use such a thing and tried and never finished building one in flash and I never got around to finishing or figuring out how. But I noticed this one is not in flash unlike many other church sites that I see around. So I was wandering how easy this is or how hard it is and how much someone would charge or even donate for a church. Let me know.

Hi,
I was supposed to be doing a website for this church when I happened to go to their domain name and the site was mysteriously working again...I have no idea how or who built it to start with but it is outdated. But enough chit chat. The site is kirbychurch.org . I didn't design but I was wandering if an expert on this subject could look at it and see if the sites structure is worth keeping and redesigning or to start over (of which I was going to do). Thanks.

And also im not sure if the company that built this has given them the source code or not. Im not even sure what it was written it. So ya. Advice on that 2.

Godaddy Finally Turned Me Against Them!

This morning I got up to check my email and to my surprise it said invalid login name or password and so I was startled because I havnt changed my password or any settings to that matter lately. So I gave them a call to see what happend, now my usual service with GoDaddy has been excellent. This conversation turned me against them.
Me: hi, I have a problem with my email.
Godaddy: Ok, let me look in your account.
Then all the login info etc went on. And finally we got to here:
Godaddy:It seems that your domain expired on 5/11 of this year.
Me:Ok thats weird I thought I had set it on auto renew.
Godaddy: Yes you did but we tried the card and something went wrong.
Me: The card is fine so im not sure what the problem is.
Then we talked about the card and aparently something happend that they "dont know".
Me: So what do I need to do to fix this?
Godaddy: Your domain has been carried over to the registry department and we charge a $80 fee to reclaim your domain.
Me: I was like O MY GOD ARE YOU PEOPLE INSANE? **I was already mad at this point
So we argued a few minutes and he said im sorry but your going to have to pay the fee to regain access to your email and your account. So I was very upset and I needed my email so I said whatever go ahead. So we went through the process and the total was like $90.19. And as a young designer I dont have alot of money to just give up like that. So Im very unhappy with them and am looking for another hosting/domain service. Any suggestions?

Well im fairly new at PHP so I wanted to see how hard it would be to have like a client upload form to upload big files, pictures, etc.. so the client wont have to send it by email because its to big and so they wont have to download an ftp program. Which is a big hassle for the non-tech clients. So ya. Any thoughts and opinions would be helpful. Maybe a field that selects which directory for which client it uploads it to..

Great Book For Css Beginners..

Hey everyone,
I was looking at all the post and decided to put up how I learned my ground in CSS. I went to Barnes and Noble and bought a book called CSS Web Site Design associated with lynda.com. It was a great book with great tutorials and video and everything you need to get started. And with the web squeeze and the tutorials on here I got on my way to learn css. Its fairly easy to learn if you know html but I didn't so I had to stop and learn more of html. ha. But now im on my way to bigger and better css. But ya. Any other books, videos, tutorials anyone else has found to be a good help?

I was wandering if any kind soul would be willing to do a logo for nothing or little to nothing. It doesnt have to be the greatest in the world but fairly decent for website, bulletins, newsletters, etc. If anyone is interested ill make sure your name is associated with the logo. The church has about 500 ppl so youll get alot of publicity. If anyone is interested please shoot me an email at josh@tcpodg.com . Thanks.

I never really kept track of how much time I spent on a project, but since I want to get into serious business, I decided to keep track of my hours per project. I just needed a good program that would help me do that, and I found it: Klok, for Adobe AIR works like a charm and it keeps track of that you're doing per project and gives you a sweet overview of what you did.. This program will show me exactly how much time I spend per project. A real recomendation.
Opera

Hello, I thought that the Opera web browser deserves it's own thread. I have been playing around with a lot today and I have to say that it is awesome. It has many advantages. Firstly looks, The interface is sleek and professional. And the Panels tool bar lets to access the power of Opera in a single click.

I was previously impressed with dial up but only after much playing today have a realised how much it speeds up productivity. I often have trouble with remembering php functions. ctrl and 9 takes me straight to documents. So much quicker than moving the mouse to the bookmark tab.

Pop ups. Firefox 2 blocks some pop ups. Opera blocks everything. I went onto a shady site and I could actually view the content without having my screen obscured with 'YOU HAVE WON!' messages.

Synchronising. OMG! I have 3 computers and have always struggled with bookmarks. Opera removes all of that. Get a my.opera account (reminds me of a mac account.) Hit the synchronise buttons and your bookmarks are saved. Login in somewhere else. Hit synchronise and everything is updated. Brilliant.

The built in bittorrent is also very helpful.

At the end of the day Opera is a great browser. I love it and if you haven't tried it out already then give it a fair try.

EDIT: Just noticed it ships with a built in e-mail client! As we speak it is syncing with gmail account (9k messages ). Very impressive. No server info, just username and password.
