Broadband Speed Increase

I have my Broadband through UPC, which used to be NTL (a television cable company) here in Ireland. I went on to there website the other day and noticed that my package of 3mb could be upgraded free of charge (agreeing means a new 12 month contract). Anyway, I opted for this and got confirmation this evening that the upgrade was complete. I was told to reboot my cable modem before the change took place.

I chacked out speedtest.net before reboot, 3.1mb, after reboot 8.85mb, this was at 7.30 on a fri evening. So I checkd again a few mins ago, 9.45mb.

How reliable is speedtest.net??

So Mugabe kills rigs an election which he clearly lost badly. He then forces a re-run. During this time he viciously attacks and kills many people who voted against him. He spread fear around his country. During his time in power he has made money worthless, he has destroyed the farming infrastructure. He has taken a stable and moderately wealthy country - in African terms - and driven it into the ground. He has received world wide condemnation for his actions.

What does England do? Takes away his honorary Knighthood and stops them from playing Cricket... does anyone else find this response completely inappropriate?

Hi!

Getting the obvious out of the way... yes, i am from space and yes i am a dog and yes my name is bobby. I am a good judge of character, yet sometimes confuse characters with characters in the code. Is it so strange to have a conversation with the code? You try coming from a really different place and see if you don't wind up talking to a piece of ascii. And yes, ascii is much different where i come from.

Thanks!

b

p.s I think it would be a good usability improvement to strong align the 'post new topic' and 'preview post' with the left side of the copy text... centering is always tempting, but generally creates more eye looking around then neceserarry... studies were done where I came from that showed when things line up with other things on the space you are looking at, naturally your eyes find them easier. while when something is placed in a space that doesn't align with anything we find it a challenge to locate.

Its just been a theme recently where I find myself looking for the most obvious thing on the page... like a downloading site and the last thing I see is 'download file' in some small icon randomly placed somewhere.

Hi,
I was supposed to be doing a website for this church when I happened to go to their domain name and the site was mysteriously working again...I have no idea how or who built it to start with but it is outdated. But enough chit chat. The site is kirbychurch.org . I didn't design but I was wandering if an expert on this subject could look at it and see if the sites structure is worth keeping and redesigning or to start over (of which I was going to do). Thanks.

And also im not sure if the company that built this has given them the source code or not. Im not even sure what it was written it. So ya. Advice on that 2.

Opera

Hello, I thought that the Opera web browser deserves it's own thread. I have been playing around with a lot today and I have to say that it is awesome. It has many advantages. Firstly looks, The interface is sleek and professional. And the Panels tool bar lets to access the power of Opera in a single click.

I was previously impressed with dial up but only after much playing today have a realised how much it speeds up productivity. I often have trouble with remembering php functions. ctrl and 9 takes me straight to documents. So much quicker than moving the mouse to the bookmark tab.

Pop ups. Firefox 2 blocks some pop ups. Opera blocks everything. I went onto a shady site and I could actually view the content without having my screen obscured with 'YOU HAVE WON!' messages.

Synchronising. OMG! I have 3 computers and have always struggled with bookmarks. Opera removes all of that. Get a my.opera account (reminds me of a mac account.) Hit the synchronise buttons and your bookmarks are saved. Login in somewhere else. Hit synchronise and everything is updated. Brilliant.

The built in bittorrent is also very helpful.

At the end of the day Opera is a great browser. I love it and if you haven't tried it out already then give it a fair try.

EDIT: Just noticed it ships with a built in e-mail client!
It happens to me quite often that i submit a post and see a typo in it (although i use preview also before submitting). Then I quickly edit my post seconds after posting it. Is it needed that if the post is edited within x amount of seconds/minutes, that it still shows the "post has been edited" bit? Probably no one has even read it then yet (e-mail notifications aside).

It takes up space, and if you edit that quickly after submitting, it's probably not even useful information for other topicreaders.

What do you say?

(edit: lol, changed I to It.. typo) *sigh*

- edit2: Now that i type that, maybe besides the "delay ignore", there could be a "reason for edit" field, where you can simply type "typo" or something.

I've been playing Command and Conquer a while, and I have to set it for the lowest graphics setting, but, I don't really care.. It's playable.

Now, we're planning on moving pretty soon, and I wanted to make my pc sort of a media center. I would buy (for example) a HannsG 28" monitor and use it as a tv, attached to my pc, BUT, I would need 2 DVI connections. 1 for my Samsung monitor I'm using now, and one for the new monitor.
Now: If I'd buy a cheap graphics card with a DVI connection, would I still be able to use my on board connector without having to switch it on and off in the bios, or would I be better off buying a PCI-E card with 2 DVI connections?

Being an Apple guy, I never would have bought a Zune. But after side by side comparison with my 30gb last-generation iPod, I take my Zune with me when I want music and media away from my computer now.

I just can't figure out for the life of me why Microsoft hasn't released software that runs on OS X to manage a Zune. Undoubtedly they're assuming Apple followers won't stray from the iPod, but even still... it's ridiculous... It's a bit of a nuisance having to run VMware to manage media on my Zune. I hope Microsoft realizes they actually have a product hardcore Appleheads may still consider.

I am secretly pleased that Microsoft hasn't branded their name on Zune's, though ;) "Hello from Seattle" is as close as it gets.

Fao Men With A Pulse.

Hopefully this will go down the right way.

Did anyone ever make it on to robb's oop's celebs website when it was running. I don't know when it began and criminally it doesn't have a wiki page. Basically at the dawn of the real internet. (I'm talking post 'Jumping Jack Flash' and pre Google Dominance.) When porn only came at the premium and Internet speed was measured in b instead of Mb there was one site. One site that was free and updated daily.

This website was Robb's celebs. If you saw some pretty female actress or singer, you would find out her name in the credits then look her up in Robb's Celebs. If there was anything, revealing dress or *gasp* a boob popped out during some obscure event this guy some how dug out it out and it found its way onto its website.

Such a website could be dismissed as 'sad' but it was far more than sad. This site, through more than a decade of growth, had thousands (dare I say tens of) celebrities both past and present. It must have had gigabytes of images. At one stage he tried to introduce moving pictures. Due to phonemial demand from visitors it would be down for 29.5 days a month as the mini-site will have been swamped. It really was a marker, almost an icon of times gone bye.

As the years went on the site seemed immune to time, always updated, it was built with frames and had a starry background that didn't change in like 10 years. After some time it became nostalgic. It didn't even have a search function. Every celeb was sorted by first name, not second. It was impractical but it worked.

Anyway, I bring this up because today I googled it. Why did I google it? I just wanted to see how it was going. Upon googling it turns out that Robb Douglass has died of Phenmonia! I can't believe it.

Did anyone else ever wonder onto the Robbs Celebs site to check it out? Is anyone else some what saddened that such an ancient and well maintained website has vanished forever.

Sitepoint Interview With Andy Budd

This is a nice read for all those who have 5 minutes to spare.

Amongst the little gems, this comment comes across as a bit of a worry:

QUOTE (AndyBudd)

I honestly think that CSS is basically a dead technology after this next revision. I think that's really sad, because I'm a standards advocate, but that's what I believe. I don't think we'll see a CSS4. I don't think we'll see half of the modules in CSS3 implemented, or even end up in the specification, because CSS3 has been under development for 8 years or something ridiculous, and in 8 years we haven't got a single module complete yet. We've got a few almost finished.

...

I think part of the problem is that there are innate problems with the standards development mechanism, and I think there are innate problems with the browser vendors, and I do think we're going to see other technologies -- sadly, proprietary technologies like Flash and Flex and XAML and XML and MXML and non-native Web technologies -- take over, because we are limited with what we can do with our current technology. The reason we're seeing all of these JavaScript libraries come out is because they're supplementing what the standards and the browsers should be doing. It's kind of a stupid situation to be in, and we've got to lobby the W3C to pull their finger out to get these standards ratified, we've got to lobby the browser vendors to stop arguing among each other over petty little things and implement them, and there needs to be a radical shake-up in the way these things are created.

You can read the full article here: http://www.sitepoint.com/article/andy-budd...n-usability-css

What are your thoughts?

I have been talking to this guy who has everything he could ever want. He started when he was 14 from scratch and now has a business that is well known and brings in loads of money. He is a hero to me personally. I look at his dedication for web design and business and I see that he came from nothing, and is something now. I want to give him a thanks.

He has taught me a lot, and we've only been talking for few days now. I'm sure a few of you know who I'm talking about...or maybe all of you. I just cant get over his dedication. A heck of a lot of people would quit after what hes been through, and done...but he didn't and now he has it all. Wow!

I am 15 and am working as hard as I can to learn all I can, hopefully to be some what as good as HE is. I have dedication and I can do anything if I set my mind to it. I'm trying/learning to be the best web developer/coder/flash expert/technician there has ever been. I know I can do it; I have no idea how but I will find a way. I'm glad to be here at TWS, and hope to learn much from everyone!

I am using Expression Engine as my back-end system, so the learning curve on that was pretty steep for me. I am still working on the back-end portions of DESIGN and CLOTHING. So, right now HOME, ABOUT and CONTACT are ready to view. But the rest should be up by the end of the week.

The website is a clothing and advertising company based around sustainability.
Summer Booty

Summer Booty– A Sound Unsound Network Production

The most anticipated album of the summer is finally available to download The sun may not be out yet but kick back and grab a beer (or a white wine if your a lady) and devour Summer Booty :D

As Mungo Jerry so eloquently stated, "You can reach right up and touch the sky.” They, of course, were talking about summertime (or, perhaps something their urologist prescribed them for kidney stones). One thing is for sure, your hands will be perpetually raised in the air when listening to this compilation of artists bit by the heat of a thousand suns and sometimes cooled down by leaning poolside with a nice Bacardi mixer. Come and let your spirit fly, indeed!

The phenoms on this album may steal your sunshine, only to bring it back with beats and beams for the total opposite of a cruel, cruel summer. Mr. Rusty and Topflyte wanna bounce the beach ball back and between your ears, while Supakon gets it caught in the net for a twist and turn of the sphere. And, speaking of turning, Maxwell Jump and Creasos not only spin the tables, but require spinning of your bodies and minds (but no shirts and shoes are ever required).

Everyone out of the pool for the next fifteen minutes, for there will be an adult swim lifeguarded by World Famous Audio Hacker and MarkyBoy; however, they will not blow whistles, but blow the roof of the snack bar. Where, incidentally, you can check out today’s special: a Virtual DJ-mixed creation with beats and breaks (extra hot peppers will cost you a notch up on your headphones). And, speaking of DJs, tonight’s Dip and Dance will have tunes from Le Clown, MXR, and Spider, playing non-stop favourites for when the temps stay up much like the partiers do till dawn.

Icky will be there as the summer sun is once again raised for a wake-up call, handing you a day’s worth of Bobby Martinis, made with the traditional vermouth and the non-traditional cut from a crate, aged.

Here, your day will be filled with a party at the Hahnstudios where the soundproof is opened as is their dance floor. So, whether you are in Kingston Town, on Sesame Street, the Latin Corner, or anywhere around the world (repeat 72x), you will feel the sensual seduction even when these boys of summer have gone.

Thank you to (in no particular order) HahnStudios, Bobby Martini, Guvnor, Supakon, World Famous Audio Hacker, Icky, DJ MXR, Mr. Rusty, DJ Spider, Corrupt DJ’s, Creasos, DJ Le Clown, Virtual DJ, mARKYbOY and MaxwellJump for the excellent tracks that they have submitted to the album.

An extra special thank you goes to:

The pre-release team – Mr. Rusty, Supakon, Andy_S, Icky and Guvnor for the numerous hours of work they put in to the track selection process for Summer Booty.

Bobby Martini for his mastering of the tracks that we were asked to master.

Andy_S for the domains http://summerbooty.com & http://summerbooty.com

Mr. Rusty for the Summer Booty artwork

and last but not least Neckice for his brilliant Linear notes.

CD1

Creasos - Summer Storm - Storm vs Switch vs Ace of Base ft Grover from Sesame Street

Topflyte - Summer Holiday (Remix) - Cliff Richard

Supakon - Get Your Sunlight On - Missy Elliot vs Deeper Territory

DJ Spider - I Don't Feel Like Hip Dancing On Holiday - Scissor Sisters vs Madonna vs Shakira

Icky - Do Ya Really Like It Time After Time - Vinyl Groover vs Masters Of Ceremonies

Corrupt DJ's - Mixer Shakey Ass - Claude Von Stroke vs Eminem feat Nate Dogg

Mr. Rusty - Boy Survives Summer Love - Young Jeezy ft.
Solar Thorn

Ha!

Solar Thorn

Well here's the thing, my sister's boyfriend is the lead guitarist in a Death Metal band and as things tend to go in families, word eventually found its way to his ears that I was web developer.

He asked that I create the website for his band. I happily accepted, even though I'm not sure if I'll get paid. I accepted because I was to be in charge of the design, the images, the layout and basically everything meaning that it is a work that I can have fun with and hopefully place in my portfolio.

It wasn't until after I accepted to build the site that I remembered that I can't stand Death Metal, have no idea what your average Death Metal fan sees as appealing in the music (I can sometimes find a decent guitar riff or melody mixed in amongst the screaming) and thus didn't really know where to start.

I have done an extensive amount of research and have put together this site based on my findings but what I want to know is (if there are any metal fans on the Squeeze) if I have captured what one would expect to see on a Metal Band's site.

Somethings to note as you critique my site:

The code is value XHTML strict but it isn't. It isn't because I have placed a flash music player on the site.

I would like to hear your critique on the feel and overall layout of the site, the flow and pages I am still putting together.

Some interesting things I have done/found on this site that I normally would stay clear of:

Liberally used PNG's with alpha transparency as backround images, my research into the core audience for such a site showed that a vast majority will have IE7 or other alpha-transparency compatible browser.

Coded the site optimised for 1024 * 720 and higher screen resolutions based on the above findings.

Fallen even further in love with my graphics tablet as I created the images to be used on the site :D

Using CAKEPHP, built a backend CMS for the site in PHP/MySQL so the band can easily add/remove pages and other stuff on the site. This is the first time I have used cake for a personal project, it certainly helps to cut down on the menial tasks in PHP.

So in a nutshell, let me know what you think of the design and whether it says "Death Metal" to you... I understand that the source material is not everyone's cup of tea so feel free to say how you feel but consider the target audience...

Thanks for having a look.

Rakuli

Please Review My Site

Hi, This site has been reviewed on WF before, so hope this does not bore you! my user name is Oak there.

Aside from any points you would like to make, please can you give your thoughts on the following

Navigation:
Do you think there is too many or repeated Nav page links causing confusion? Do the hover links work well? or should I make them (sorry dont no the correct term) normal links?

Home Page:
Am I displaying the information well? I am finding it difficult to display important announcements e.g. Up Coming Events. I wanted to have everything in view without having to scroll down but maybe I should forget that idea?

Image roll overs:

I am not sure about these, I think I prefer to have images and text laid out together so they compliment each other.

Any suggestions??

Thanks for your time!

Jacob
Visit My Website

Hello

Hi, my name is Jacob, I am a Capoeira teacher and run Capoeira Canal in West London, I use the name Oak on Webforumz but have preferred to go by my real name on the websqueeze. I am no web designer, I just found learning how to do content updates myself easier than hassling someone else to do it... this lead to finding out about SEO and the use of CSS. The site is now well functional with no errors since last check! and I have seen some great results in Google page position (check for your self), which in tern has def helped CC.

What I think I struggle with the most is layout, how to give the important information to visitors to the site whilst keeping a nice looking easy to use design.

Thanks for reading.. looks like a great forum!

Jacob R
