I have WordPress 2.9.1 running in WAMP and I find that if I use any permalink structure other than the default it won't display my pages. I can edit them just fine in wp-admin but I simply get a "The URL /blah/blah/ was not found on this server" when I try to browse to them. i.e. not even my 404 page, which I *have* created shows up if I give the site a garbage URL.

Is it maybe a .htaccess thing?

Hi All

I'm trying to fix a problem with overflow that is only present in IE 6 & 7. When the same page is viewed in Firefox, Opera or IE8 the problem is not evident.

As you can see in IE6 & 7 the contents overspill the containing DIV but in Firefox, Opera and IE8 it doesn't. I've spent hours on this but can't find what makes it overspill. The site wasn't built by me so it's frustrating trying to de-bug someone elses code!

Any ideas??

2. There are some parts that work in chrome good but firefox not that good ?
3. How to master div positioning techniques for all browsers ?

All of the methods that I have found all involve PHP or javascript (but most mobile browsers do not support javascript)

I work on a site that the client works with an SEO company. They have told me to find an automatic redirect without changing the pages url's from .htm to .php

Been quite a while since I've posted here because I haven't been doing much web development stuff for a long while. This site was however always a blessing when I was so I'm back!

I've been working on this design for my work. It's very basic and is still being tweaked but I just can't seem to get it to display correctly in Opera, Safari or Chrome. It looks fine in Firefox as well as IE7 and IE8 and only ever so slightly wrong in IE6 (just missing a bit of space which I figure I can add with a tincy bit of conditional CSS).

I have seen Wp plugins like: members only, but this redirects all visitors to to the main Wp admin login page that will give them full access to admin area- not what I want. Anyone know of a plugin for this?

Once done, members can upload pictures and add comments etc. from the front end. I have read that there are issues with abuse from visitors with bad intentions and spam. I hoped hiding this area as a members only would solve this?

The way I was thinking of doing it was for the slight shadow at the top just adding a thin <div> with a background image of the shadow.

For the highlight I was going to cut it into three so I would have a wide top highlight and then a <div> on each side holding the bit that comes around the edges. I don't think however this is the best way to achieve what I want, are there any alternatives?

The line above shows an "a" tag with a class of "li-image", this is the sprite image itself and has a display:block assigned to it also., the second "a" tag is the text that accompanies it.
I moved the call to the sprite to the overall "li a {}" style, and found that my second a tag that hold the text, also got the sprite image assigned to it.
To stop this, I just set the background position to be outside the visible area of the text, so it, in effect, is hidden. Then all i needed to do was adjust the background position for the "li-image" tag.

How is everyone?

In february I will be unleashing my new project http://wpenvy.com a website selling premium wordpress themes.

What I need is a system to help me with this process. I want a system where a person can buy the themes (via paypal and other payment modules), and then have the files to download. But I also need the website to have a membership type thing, where they have an account and can see there files and download again and so on.

I have heard about numerous software for this but not sure which fits the best purpose, anyone have any ideas?

I have looked into AMember, WPEcommerce and EJunkie for out of website payment.

Does anyone have any suggestions?

I am coding a new interface at this link and I have run into a sticky situation... The client has to have IE6 upwards compatibility, so I have to hack for IE6, 7 and 8.

The interface looks awesome in firefox, all functionality works perfectly.

When viewing in IE6 the menu system is weirdly spaced, it moves around on hover and has weird styling. Im pretty sure IE7 + 8 are just margin issues fixed with a conditional statement for each version....

I need help with the menu system and layout for IE6 - making this work and look semi-ok so the dumbo's still using IE6 can still use it....

I have set my permalinks so that my URL is of the sort, http://mysite.co.uk/catergory/post-name.

This is working find. However when I click on the category, for example, the actual word category is displayed in the URL.

For example, when I click on the category graphs, I'm taken to the page http://mysite.co.uk/category/graphs.

However, if i manually type in the address I can go the the page http://mysite.co.uk/graphs, which is exactly the same.

I know it's not a major issue but it's annoying me a little. Does anyone know of a way so that when you click on the category name, you can get it to link to just http://mysite.co.uk/graphs for example.

Also would this be an issue for SEO, two 'different' pages displaying the same thing?

Be great if anyone has any ideas?

One suggestion is to add <meta name="robots" content="noindex, follow" /> to all pages except the individual posts, so the other pages won't be indexed, and thus you won't get a duplicate content penalty.

The other suggestion is to change all pages except the individual posts to just display an excerpt of the post, along with a link to the full post, so avoiding any duplicate content.

While I like the second idea more, since it means that all pages of your site will get indexed while avoiding duplicate content, I'm not a fan of just displaying excerpts of posts (well, maybe okay for the archives, but not for the index). I find that when I'm reading a blog that uses excerpts, I'm less likely to click through and read the whole post than I would be if the whole post was displayed.

So I was wondering what the best way to prevent duplicate content in Wordpress is? Is it just me who is less likely to read a whole post if I have to click to see it?

I love em dashes—these long-hyphen type things—as they make text look so much classier. By comparison, hyphens - like these - look positively shabby.

Some people add full spaces around em dashes — like this — whereas others leave them closed up—like this. Personally, I've never liked full spaces (at least, not in Verdana).

Another option, which I really like, is to use a hair space. This is a very narrow space which, according to that ALA article, is not defined in HTML. And yet the HTML validator doesn't throw an error when I add hair spaces (&# 8202;) into my markup. Here's an example:

  • This is an em dash—with no spacing.
  • This is an em dash — with hair spacing.
  • This is an em dash — with full spacing.


According to the Wikipedia article, " Very few user agents are able to render a hair space correctly: in most cases the result is an unwanted symbol or a question mark on the screen". Yet I've looked at it in Firefox, Chrome, Safari, and IE8. All of these display a nice narrow space. Opera displays a full space (no problem). I guess I should test in IE7 and IE6...

So my question is this: is there any problem with using hair spaces (&# 8202;) in HTML?

IE6 shows "no glyph" boxes, which means it would require a javascript hack (or similar).

I'm not really sure if this is a CSS issue or HTML, but for some reason my background seems to be like 2000px wide instead of just fitting to the screen; not sure what's going on there, if you could help out. My second problem is that in IE 6 and 7, the logo in the footer that says "obsidian design" gets flipped underneath the bottom border of the footer.

Finally, for some reason when the paragraphs appear in the main content area of the pages of the site, the border disappears...? Any help is appreciated smile.gif

Question 1:
As you can see, the button with the text "Organisator" is displayed twice, the right one a little bit higher then the left one.
If you check my code, you'll see the button-link is only coded once. By using FireBug i noticed firefox (or wathever else) adds an extra line of code, outside the <div> for the menu.
I don't want this line of code, so how do i stop it adding itself?

Question 2:
The "menu"<div> should be horizontally centered. I tried adding the attribute "align=center" to the <div>, but it doesn't work.

Question 3:
The buttons have a standard width (200px), but the total site does not (because of different screen resolutions). I would like to repeat a certain image (just the non-hover image without the text) left and right of the menu, so the complete width is used.
how do i do this?

  1. It seems to insist on using named entities like », which don't exist in XML, causing an XML parsing error (I'm using XHTML)

  3. If I try and post a comment without filling in all the necessary fields, when I submit the comment I get taken to a new page that just has a message on it saying that I need to fill in XXX.
    I would like client side validation and failing that, the same page should be reloaded (with the fields I did fill out populated with the POST data), the error message, and the problem field highlighted in some way.
  4. If I post a comment that needs validating, I (as the comment poster) don't get any message that it's being held for validation, the page just reloads without my comment, so it looks like the comment wasn't submitted.
  5. It seems I can't integrate Wordpress to fit in with my existing site, but rather I would need to integrate my existing site to fit in with Wordpress. I'm concerned about adding Wordpress bloat to pages that don't need it. I'm not sure how I'd do this either - all the info I can find seems to be about converting static sites (rather than dynamic sites) to Wordpress.

The layout is designed with the popular (once-popular?!) method of floating the left and right columns, creating a center column with wide margins to accommodate the floated sidebars, and using a background image to fake the columns when their content doesn't extend as long as the main content.

I therefore can't use the obvious "clear" command to make the titles and/or paragraphs clear the floated images. If I use "clear" in the <h1> or <p> tags, then all the center column's content is pushed way down to clear the content in the sidebars.

Is there another way to make the titles and paragraphs behave as blocks, even if they have floated images in them? Or is there a better way to design the 3-column layout?

One caveat: If at all possible I want to use only the <h1> and <p> and <img> tags - set up in CSS - in the presentation layer. My reasoning for that is that the site will be a Contribute site, and users will maintain this content (optionally with floated images) themselves with Adobe Contribute. Therefore simple is essential; solutions involving transparent images or other additional content to trick the browser into positioning properly become too complicated.

I'm in the process to write a custom photo gallery, and its going not to bad. I have just a bit of trouble figuring out why my image is not displaying after some animations were applied to it.

The animation I created fades out the previous image, and fades in the new one (the previous image also becomes smaller while the next image takes its place.

To get this animation working, I have 2 images. The one has a width of 250, while the other has a width of 0. When the animation is complete, I assign the source of the new image to the one that was faded out and i reset the properties for both images.

Below is the code for the animation

Unfortunately, I have a few issues on the site. One, the pictures to the left and right don't show up for some reason. But the main issue is the navigation; for some reason if you hover over a link, the list appears and you can navigate, right? Wrong. As soon as you move the mouse up to click on a link it disappears...? However, if you stay on like the left 1/3 of the word, then it works fine.

I was completely new to CSS and HTML when I designed the site (and I still pretty much am), so any help is appreciated.

Do you see how the flash header doesn't properly load..

The header is loaded via js... there 30+ pages so changing it isn't really an option. I modified it a little to change the path of flash move from /movie.swf to domain.com/movie.swf.

The main site loads the movie fine. The forum page doesn't. If I run the movie it just plays... its like it is getting stuck on a frame... I really don't know what is going on. I am have nearly pulled out all my hair trying to figure out how to solve this issue. I am making a rollover text, but I want the text to change in my content div, the rollover text is the menu div. I have created a flash menu that we will use on our websites. First, I created a swc file containing some utility classes that will be used by the menu. Then I created a new project which contains the menu, and referenced the above mentioned swc file. When I compile the project, it works 100%. But if I move the compiled objects to another folder, it seems the project does not work anymore. To be more specific, I have written javascript to add items to the menu, and this is the part that seems to crash. The compiled objects in the original development folder works just fine. The javascript is referenced relative to the html document containing the flash object, so its not a matter that the js file could not be located.

Here is the structure of my output directory:

Before I create my own I was wondering if anyone can recommend a plugin that makes video uploads easy. I don't want to use the media manager as it will be too complicated to explain the audience. Ideally the plugin would have the following options.

3) Vimeo Video
4) Viddler Video

The user then fills in one of the boxes, writes a little in the input box and posts the article. The result of this will be a pending article with the video in it.
