I have a container Flash movie that loads in other swf files. Some of these have videos, sounds etc loaded in different ways from simply embedded to sound objects etc.

However what I need to add to the "holder" movie is a mute button that works across the board - ie it just puts the volume to 0, but doesn't stop anything. I will also of course need "unmute" capability.

I can't find anything helpful online. stopAllSounds doesn't work, and I can't use setVolume as it's not for specific objects. Surely there must just be a "global" volume functionality?

Any help would be much appreciated.

Hey everyone,
I was looking at all the post and decided to put up how I learned my ground in CSS. I went to Barnes and Noble and bought a book called CSS Web Site Design associated with lynda.com. It was a great book with great tutorials and video and everything you need to get started. And with the web squeeze and the tutorials on here I got on my way to learn css. Its fairly easy to learn if you know html but I didn't so I had to stop and learn more of html. ha. But now im on my way to bigger and better css. But ya. Any other books, videos, tutorials anyone else has found to be a good help?

Winmerge - Super Free Tool (especially For Forum Owners)

Hi guys,

I know there is a few forum owners on here, so I thought I would harp on about a bit of software that has made my life a lot easier. As you know, when the forum software creators release a new update, the first thought that comes to your head is "ZOMG NOOO MOAR TEMPLATE EDITZ RLY? YA RLY!!1111 SRSLY NOOOOOOO WAIIIIIIIII" and then you sit there staring at the screen when it tells you that you have lots of out of date templates. FEAR NOT! WinMerge is here!!!!! WinMerge is an excellent freeware tool that allows you to compare numerous bits of code and it will highlight the differences between them then is all you have to do, is select the changes and press "Move Left/Right". This especially became handy for me when vBulletin started to use "Security Tokens", as many people were complaining they were spending days going through every template looking for the sections that needed tokens. It took me 1hr 30 mins to go through every single file

Give it a try, it's the bomb!

WinMerge - http://winmerge.org/

Cheers,

Ross

Yes, it would be hard work, but if we can update daily with indepth news reports, it can really work, and after a few weeks hopefully the comments might start to flow.

It would run on WordPress, I would find a theme then modify it to suit the needs.

I was thinking of calling it 'The Championship' but I'm not sure.

I would pay all the costs of hosting, so don't worry about that :D

Placing A Img Element Below A Text Input Element

I'm trying to get a text input element to have an inner glow (or maybe outerglow).
Content Shifts Below Other Content In Ie6

Hey,

I'm having a problem in IE6 for example on the following page:

http://www.ladisfruteria.nl/shop/Olijfolie...zijn-c-250.html

It happens on each category productlist page (categories are shown on left side).
The last product is shown wrong. The image shifts below the content. In some other categories, there is also a description viewable when you click "toon meer productinfo". If you do that, that description is below the content, and the image is correct. Somehow, always the last div in the last product info shifts below the parent div (#mainContentTeksten).

I was kinda hoping someone would notice a mistake. I've tried all kinds of things, f.e. removing floats, adding breaks with "clear:both", trying to put the entire thing in a 2 columned table, changing the width of the divs, the size of the short descriptions, but it doesn't fix it. Am i missing something?

Hope you can help. Thanks!

I know that sounds nuts, but the ones with more information ton the page, then those are the ones that appear to shift - however, the ones that shift, all line up. Aware that I'm sounding slightly crazy, but if you follow the links, you'll see what I mean (I hope).

(I've validated the XHTML and my CSS and they came back without errors.
Seamless Background Pattern

I'm currently redesigning my website and I came across the problem of creating a seamless background in the header. I solved it eventually. Just wanted to let you guys know the answer in case anybody else has this problem.

I have a header that has a repeating pattern as background. The header also contains an image that sits centrally aligned on the page. Sounds easy, so I just did the following

CODE

   <body>
   <div id="header"><img src="header.png" alt="Header Image"/></div>
   </body>

The CSS looks like this

CODE

   * {
     margin: 0px;
     padding: 0px;
   }

   #header {
     width: 100%;
     text-align: center;
     background-image: url(pattern.png);
   }

The header image continues the background pattern. The transition between the two should be seamless. But as you can see here it doesn't really work. When you change the width of the browser window the header image slides across the background.

After a bit of searching on the web I finally found this very simple solution. By simply setting the horizontal background position to center, one can align the background with the centralised header image.

CODE

   * {
     margin: 0px;
     padding: 0px;
   }

   #header {
     width: 100%;
     text-align: center;
     background-image: url(pattern.png);
     background-position: center 0;
   }

The working example can be seen here.

I need to do another website but I'm not a designer. Not the kind that produces good designs when asked at least :) I was thinking 4templates for a template and then add own logo and some pictures to make it at least a bit unique. The prices are so low that it just might be worth it and the designs are looking awesome (most of them). I haven't seen much of those designs used so it's not like you see the same design every day. And I don't think it should be a problem even if you did. Look at all those blog designs which are recycled over and over again.

Does anyone have any user experience with this kind of services? I'm a bit concerned that does the xhtml/css code allow customization or has it done so that you cannot easily edit it. Any comments?

Almost forgot this: http://www.4templates.com/

Protecting Paid Video

Context

I'm planning to create coaching videos for my badminton website, and offer them as subscription service.

The idea is to release a few short videos every month, and charge a small amount of money (say, £3 a month) to subscribers. I'll probably offer a free trial for the first month, but require a full sign-up to access the trial. If a subscriber takes no action to cancel the account, then he will be charged subscription fees automatically once the trial period expires.

I'm essentially following the subscription model of badminton.tv, but I believe I have a few competitive advantages over them. Of course, they have advantages too, such as easy access to international players and a head start. But that's the nature of competition. ;)

My questions

How do I protect my videos from mass copying? If I leave them unprotected, then it only takes one bad customer to ruin my entire business model by sharing the files on forums and so on.

I understand that no copy-protection is 100% secure. Perfect security is a theoretical impossibility, at least in this context. But that's not the point. It's a matter of making the videos secure enough to reduce my risk to sensible levels. It's like locking the door of your house: a burglar can still break in, but it's more difficult than if you had left the door wide open and a sign saying, "I'm out, so now would be a great time to steal my stuff. There's cash in my filing cabinet and my wife's pearls are hidden inside a fake can of shaving cream."

I guess I'll need some kind of Digital Rights Management. There are essentially three security issues:

Prevent copying/redistribution of the videos

Prevent account sharing

Prevent "infinite free trials" (register with a different username, and start another free trial)

I don't mind a small amount of account sharing; but potentially, one member could organise account sharing for 100 other people on a forum. Therefore I must have stronger security than a primitive "is this user already logged in elsewhere?" test.

Should I keep the content streaming or allow DRM-controlled downloads? Should I use WMV or Flash? How much will I have to pay for the different options? Any other thoughts? I'm really completely new to this, so all suggestions are welcome.

Hi.

After the very long debacle of getting the menu to work on the site I have been building I seem to only have one tiny weeny problem left and I'm hoping it's easily solved.

In IE6 because of the box-model problem the menu is a smidgen too long and doesn't fit into it's designated space.
I found that if I adjusted the width by 1px accross all the menu options it fit well enough in IE6 however this of course makes all other browsers look that tiny bit wrong.

My initial thought was EASY! I'll just make a conditional stylesheet that's only relevent to IE6.
However for some reason I can't get this to work.
I can get one to work for all IE's, but not specifically IE6. This of course makes IE7 look wrong!

What am I doing wrong?

CODE

&lt!--[if IE 6]>
<link rel="stylesheet" type="text/css" media="screen" href="css/ie6only.css" />
<![endif]-->

As I said, if I remove the 6 it works but it stuffs up IE7.
Importance Of Blogging?

So I had to take an "Intro to Interactive Media Design" class my first semester at this school. Basically the entire class was directed at how important it is to have a personal blog that somehow relates to the web industry. Our instructor was extremely obnoxious and claimed that if we don't blog, then we don't stand a chance as a serious designer. His reasoning was mainly to get your name into the web design/development community and start networking. Our homework each week was to blog about different Web 2.0 stuff.

This has led me to hate blogging. I wanted to see what other designers' opinion is on the subject.

Wrap Text Around A Div...

Hey all. I'm not sure if this can be done the way I want it to. If so, I'm sure it would be kind of tricky. Either that or I'm not as good as I thought I was ;) - no surprise there. Anyway, if you see the attached file, what I'm trying to do is wrap the blog text around the left nav div (it's the pinkish one). I though about just putting it into two different divs and separate it through code, but the problem is I don't know how tall the left nav div will be as it expands with it's content. Is there a way to keep the text in only one div and just wrap the text around that div according to how tall the div is? I've attached the html page I've gotten done so far so you can look at the structure I'm using. Keep in mind, I'm using absolute positioning for everything as of the moment (seemed the best way to get the tricky overlap stuff I needed to happen the way I wanted it to). Let me know if there's anything else you need.

CODE

<!DOCTYPE html PUBLIC "-//W3C//DTD XHTML 1.0 Strict//EN" "http://www.w3.org/TR/xhtml1/DTD/xhtml1-strict.dtd">
<html>
    <head>
        <title>A Day Without Pain.
I have CS2. When I make a selection the mouse automatically turns to a detract from selection instead of a move selection icon. This is soo annoying. How do I change this?

So, I gave delicious a serious try to use it as my main bookmarks, but there's 1 big downside to it: I can't sort my bookmarks! I want the ones I use most on my frontpage. Either I'm doing something wrong, or delicious is not the site for me. So I started searching for something more customizable, and came across Spurl. This one actually makes sense. It categorizes, it shows your most visited sites and it can install a bookmarks-bar. So far, I like it :)

Anyone else using social bookmarking sites?

Css Menu: Different Styling On Selected Items

I planned to post a lot more here when I signed up but there's just no time for it all. Work gets the best of me, I'm afraid. Anyway, I just popped in to check whether any of you have any good ideas on how to achieve the following: keep items selected when you move down in a menu hierarchy so that one can follow a path, from a top level to sub levels.

Here's a pic that I hope illustrate the idea:

When moving down in the menu, the corresponding levels further up in the hierarchy remain selected so that the person navigating will remember the path, or know where in the system he is. It may seem a bit awkward to do it this way, but that's how the client wants it. No drop-downs or fly-outs.

I have tried with "current" and "a:focus" but it doesn't really work out; the items do not remain selected.

Not sure if I have explained this adequately, but if someone did get it, I'd appreciate a few notes.

Hi

I am in the process of designing a website for an artist. She has a website she made using Front Page and likes the fact that she can easily update artwork with it.

I am still pretty new to this and am not sure what to do. I know XHTML, CSS and Javascript but have not a clue about creating a CMS. Is there one out there that is easy to use and cheap (read free) that anyone could recommend? The artist will need to update the art, post on a 'blog', and possibly update art on the home page which I am thinking of creating a Javascript 'slide show' for.

I appreciate any and all suggestions!

Thanks in advance   :D

Looking For A Little Inspiration

I've been slowing working through the content and structure of http://london-web-design.com/ in the past couple of weeks, and I'm stuck on one graphic to be used on the site. Hopefully someone has a neat-o idea they want to share!

I've been developing the site around the concept that companies looking for a new website will have all their questions answered in plain English, with as little technical jargon as possible. Also, the site will continue to answer some unasked questions they ought to have known. I feel that it's important for me to use simple graphics to hint at what certain pages talk about.

I want "The Stages of Web Design" area to be very concise, and each one will have a graphic at the top each around 560x180. I've got the first one made, and I love it. However, it's the graphic for the second stage that I'm drawing a complete blank.

I think this format is a great way to explain to people, "There are three stages to getting your company's website online, and this is how they go." And I think using a graphic to describe each step is hugely important.

The second stage is Development and Programming. This is the stage where the layout gets transformed from a Photoshop file to XHTML/CSS documents, PHP is written and WordPress is probably installed.

So, if you've got some concepts that may work, let's have 'em! Here are a few general guidelines I have:

No 3D images or photo-realistic graphics at all (minor drop shadows or other pseudo-3D elements can be OK).

I'd rather not use a monitor or computer in the graphic, but I can easily change my mind (especially if they're sleek and purdy Apple computers, hehe).

I kind of want to utilise floral/nature graphics within the image, but if they don't fit, I'm totally cool with that. (I certainly can't seem to make it look good.)

The blue found around the site needs to be the main color here, and text similar to "Your design is prepped for the web" will be used.

I hope I'm not being to demanding here...

People keep telling me I should write stories. I keep a blog in dutch, which started out just to keep friends and family in the loop about our wedding last year. After the wedding it was all about the move to Canada. Now a lot of readers (mostly family and friends) keep mentioning that I should do more writing, so I came up with an idea of a fictional blog. Sort of a soap series where I can let my mind go crazy on fictional stories.

Now my question: apart from my quality of writing, would it be interesting enough to start something like this? Every post would only be a few lines long. I know how hard it is to keep your attention on reading something, unless it's really interesting. Posts will go up on a regular basis...

Interesting enough, or should I flush this idea down the drain and think of something else?

I went to dreamweaver's site for help as I wanted to know if lib files can be used 'cross-domain' and they can't as they're obviously just code snippets (which I'm sure everyone here knows - but I ask too many questions anyway!). They suggested Server Side Includes :blink: - I nearly fell on the floor, I'm still struggling with css to a certain extent, so I'm basically stuffed here aren't I??? :shok: I've got no chance with this at all. These kinds of pages need to be coded with PHP, ASP or Cold Fusion don't they? Also, if so, don't ALL of the pages on the site need to be the same? I mean you can't mix html pages with these .asp, .php or .cfm can you?

Identical information is necessary for 3 different domains and instead of copy and paste, is there anything else that can be done? If anything changes it's a pain (not to mention time consuming) to alter more than one document/page. It's not always viable to do a "find and replace" en-masse via DW, plus it has been known to crash when doing this, losing information. Been there, done that!

I'm rapidly losing the will to live now. :girl_sad:

Thanks in advance.
Popje

Resource: Batching Images

Hey Guys,

As I have a bunch of product images I'm batching today I thought it would be good to share a program I found a while back that I fell in love with instantaneously. ;)

The program is called ImageGenius. What's awesome about this program aside from it's functionality is how easy it is to use. You basically create a visual workflow to batch process your images, choose the files you want to batch and viola! You can even setup the program to ftp the files once it's done processing and schedule the batches to run automatically. You can even run SQL queries to for instance update an application server to the fact that the images are ready to be shown. There are a few things that could be improved upon, but I have not been able to find another program capable of doing what IG does. Here's a screenshot from their site & a link...

PixelDragons ImageGenius

Enjoy!
Rich

Alt Tags

Me again.

I'm rather concerned over alt tags now! I have to admit, that I have been (up until my frequent visits here) largely unaware of the different types of readers (JAWS, Lynx etc. ) that are being used by people.

Our SEO company is suggesting that when a picture of one of the hotels is used that the alt text reads "Whatever hotel, area of hotel, county of hotel" i.e. "PvM Hotel, Porth, Cornwall" (didn't put the full title in case people think I'm plugging it!) Now isn't that an awful lot of text for a 'reader' to read out to the visually impaired? Shouldn't the alt text just describe what the picture is? i.e. Image of PvM Hotel. I queried this with the SEO peeps, and they got a little snotty with me, saying that this was a misconception by many.

Have I got this all wrong again? Am I doomed to be permanently dazed and confused? :girl_impossible:

I really want the websites to be user friendly, easily accessed by those with disabilities and standards compliant!

Thanks in advance
Popje :girl_smile:

Oh for crying out loud! I had my sig file wrapped in code tags! No-one is ever going to take me seriously at this rate! It's changed now, but I'm so sorry about that!!

Hi Everyone.

It seems like the Web Squeeze has slowed down a little bit of late! Far less new posts popping up.
Time to rev things up and keep this *fantastic* community alive!

I know it's against the rules double post things, but as my other post has had no response in five days and was at the bottom of an old Topic I thought it might be ok to start a fresh post. (It also seems good because others with this problem will be able to find the topic!)

I've tried using a drop down menu that Linda suggested for my website.
I've managed to get the menu working perfectly and looking right when it's on it's own page.
However when I copy and paste the HTML into my Main Layout page (where the menu is situated about 1/3rd of the way down the page and centered) it sends everything quite crazy.

Main Layout Page

The Menu on it's own

Menu CSS

Other CSS

I've just discovered that the site has gone offline, but please try the links anyway as I'm hoping to fix this ASAP!
