So Mugabe kills rigs an election which he clearly lost badly. He then forces a re-run. During this time he viciously attacks and kills many people who voted against him. He spread fear around his country. During his time in power he has made money worthless, he has destroyed the farming infrastructure. He has taken a stable and moderately wealthy country - in African terms - and driven it into the ground. He has received world wide condemnation for his actions.
What does England do? Takes away his honorary Knighthood and stops them from playing Cricket... does anyone else find this response completely inappropriate? -------------------- |

One small problem with attacking Zimbabwe.
China. Zimbabwe we can manage but if China attack us we're stuffed. (China is very good friends with Zimbabwe). Its the reason America hasn't attacked. |

First, you have to ask yourself whether individual nations have the right to act as global police. America and Britain did that with the Iraq war, and look at the mess they made.
The UN is the closest thing we have to an international law-enforcement agency. Unfortunately, it's not very capable in that role, partly because it's crippled by vetos. Individual nations, like individual people, tend to act mainly from self-interest. Iraq is of enormous geo-strategic importance, especially to America, which has desired for over 20 years to increase its military influence in the region; Zimbabwe is not. We don't have anything to gain from an invasion. This is really a job for the UN; but they've always been slow to act in such situations. |

I feel sorry for Morgan (can't spell second name). He was beaten within an inch of his life too, but thankfully he is still alive to carry on the fight.
I was talking to guy that is from Zimbabwe, and he said that if he (Morgan) had got into power, that alot of people would go back to the country. -------------------- Finally squeeezin!!!!

If England goes in, hell brakes loose like it did (and does) in Afghanistan and Iraq. Last thing we want is yet another war. Like Mike says: Let the UN try to fix it.. -------------------- |

I agree with Daniel, the China thing is the major factor here. China sells them weapons, and the rest of the world seem to be afraid of China. Thats why I don't think the UN will do anything, except, give out.
Sorry about earlier, Tsvangirai is his surname name. mdc no 1 -------------------- Finally squeeezin!!!!

What does England do? Takes away his honorary Knighthood and stops them from playing Cricket... does anyone else find this response completely inappropriate? My sister sponsors a child there, but they (Plan International) have had to pull out of the country (as have most if not all aid workers), leaving these poor people without the aid that they so desperately need. Something has got to be done. I agree with Craig, if there was oil there, then everyone would get involved. Destruction and genocide happened in the Balcans (no oil there either) - the UN got involved. The UN are basically the "World's Police" (not in a string puppet sense either) but they seem to be seriously dragging their feet over Zimbabwe and in the meantime, it's the people that suffer, not its leaders/politicians, but innocent men, women and children. Mark - China probably already hates us, it seems like most of the world dislikes the UK and US! Let's not forget though, that China aren't the only suppliers of weapons around the world! Every government is guilty of this. Okay, off soap box for now. But seriously, it's the people of Zimbabwe who are suffering the most. -------------------- QUOTE I'm challenged enough without any extra weirdness in my life! |
