Knowing Veerle (well... I don't know her but by following her blog :P ), I would say it's done with the pen tool.

Hmm, it's a layout for a magazine so I would think it has been done in a vector graphics program. If this is the case (Illustrator or Inkscape), you have the option to choose which corners or your rectangular paths are rounded. Then, it looks like a small bit of free transform to get the non-rounded corners to stick up a bit.

I wouldn't know how to achieve this effect in PS, but as Karinne says, the Pen tool (which frightens me half to death as someone who doesn't use PS anywhere near enough) is probably the answer.

I'll have a look, thanks. Even if I drew that shape in Ps, how is best to get the picture to appear in it?

Are we indeed talking about the shape I put in my reply? The orange strange-looking square?

Yeah, that's Illustrator.

You could do it with the warp-tool in Photoshop, but that's not the graceful way :)

if you want I can make a little tutorial about it..

Illustrator.

Which by the way totally rocks once you get used to vector tools. There are a lot of advantages for certain things. I've been meaning to use fireworks more actually as there are a number of tools made specifically for web design.

Also, if you like the mozilla webkit, try:

<div style="width: 200px; height: 200px; color: #fff; font-size: 18px; background-color: orange; text-align: center; -moz-border-radius-topright: 18px; -moz-border-radius-bottomleft: 18px;">
1
</div>

With a bit of fiddling you can get the desired outcome via code... probably won't work for IE though. but eh... give those ie users those nice squares they love so it doesn't matter
