How about a glossary of terms that a user can look at, this can be thing such as definitions of things such as php, css etc.

But also for software such as wordpress, CMS etc?

What do you think?
Thanks

Not a fan of that at all to tell you the truth. Never was.

I personally don't see the point when there's Wikipedia. It's ALOT of work and most of it is just copy/pasting from the wiki anyways.

Maybe someone else will see it differently but that's how I view it.

I agree to a point, but for beginner users the information on wikipedia is written for knowledgeable readers and can be quite hard to understand.

I suppose we can just answer in the threads though like we already are
Thanks

You could have content highlighting.

So if someone writes CMS. It will appear as CMS. When you over over it a neat little box with "Content Management System" inside it appears.

This would make the forum more accessible to new users.

It would be hard work lol.

I like the idea of having a wiki where members can edit it... What do yous think on that?

I dont think it will work if only admins, etc.. Do you get my point?

Yeh i get what you mean, having only admins doing it would be

1. to much of their time
2. stupid if you can get the rest of the forum to
Thanks

I don't think it would be that hard, you just need the parse the content when it is on the way in to the database. If you have an array containing the abbreviations and meanings. You can compare words to abbriviations and where necesscary input some sort of javascript hover effect.

Haha....we were going to do something like this at WF. According to Rob it is a major help to SEO, if you have a couple paragraphs about all these terms. I agree with him, but his idea was to make it only available for staff members to edit...which is way to much work for our poor staff team. So, I kinda like the idea of creating a wiki allowing members to create new definitions and descriptions. We have a great group here, and I feel the definitions would be nothing but helpful.

Here is an example....

World Wide Web Consortium (W3C)

Jacob Haug said:

The World Wide Web Consortium (W3C) Founded by Tim Berners-Lee in 1994, this international organization dictates standards for the World Wide Web. It's purpose is "to lead the world wide web to its full potential by developing protocols and guidelines that ensure long-term growth for the Web." (W3C Mission Statement)

Web designers look to W3C Standards to ensure that their sites meet current guidelines as to accessibility and coding syntax. The sites are then considered "valid", meaning that they have passed the W3C automated validation test. This process ensures that their sites will be able to be viewed by visitors using a variety of browsers, operating systems and devices.

The text would not be helpful to our SEO if it was just a copy and paste job. The text needs to be original content, and at least a few paragraphs. I believe it would be a good idea if we required a staff member to approve all entires before they were public.

This all sound good?
Thanks,
Jacob

Yeh, i think we should allow all members edit, (maybe set it that only memberes with 10/20 post can edit?), and there needs to be something there so we can approve them before they are made public.

Would it be possible for

members to edit, (with a post limit)

staff can see changes and can approve them, (rather than a certain one or two staff members, how about all staff can approve any glossary submissions that are made, would be easier)

public can view glossary
Thanks

Craig

Yes, it would be like a Wiki. I would envision anyone being able to add or edit items perhaps after you have 20 posts. But all items must be approved my a staff member. By staff member I mean Mentor, Advisor, Team Leader...etc. If you can see the all staff forum you can approve an item. This would be a separate system from the forum....but would be closely integrated as far as items in the wiki would become links within the forum so that members can get the definition and a paragraph or two about each item.
Thanks,
Jacob

When you say links, is there a chance of them becoming rather obtrusive?
Thanks

Yes, there is always that chance. I personally hate those links that bring up a little box, it always gets in my way. You see, I like to highlight as I read....so those always mess up my reading...lol. They won't be obtrusive....they will just be standard links that you can either click on or not.
Thanks,
Jacob

Could you confirm what aspect of this is currently being developed as several suggestions have been made as solutions for this.

Currently, we are just building the Wiki system, which will be a useful resource to our members. It is not in our plans to integrate this database into the forums, it will just be a separate community driven wiki of design and development terms.

At some point in the future we may decide to add this into the forum, but at that time it would only be for guests. Members would not see the links by default, but would have to turn on an option in order to see them.
Thanks,
Jacob
