Hi,
I was supposed to be doing a website for this church when I happened to go to their domain name and the site was mysteriously working again...I have no idea how or who built it to start with but it is outdated. But enough chit chat. The site is kirbychurch.org . I didn't design but I was wandering if an expert on this subject could look at it and see if the sites structure is worth keeping and redesigning or to start over (of which I was going to do). Thanks.

And also im not sure if the company that built this has given them the source code or not. Im not even sure what it was written it. So ya. Advice on that 2.

I'd say: redesign.. It's all in tables, so pretty much worthless..

The design is made in Photoshop, and after that sliced into a website, which is the most horrible thing you can do smile.gif

Alrighty then. I was discussing websites with my father (while looking at this one) and hes a well knowledgeable IT Admin for a huge company. He said that he could take frontpage and make an excellent site. And I told him no you couldn't. I was trying to tell him about Web Standards but he was just saying im trying to act smart (ouch on the feelings) when ive done plenty of research on the subject. And he said why create a site with these standards and use valid html and css and not tables and frontpage because the user will see the same thing in the end...he said who actually is going to look at the sites content and judge upon that? ... And I didnt have a very correct answer so I left. lol. What should have been my answer?

In a sense, you're both right. You're right because Frontpage is a terrible choice of program; it creates toxic code. He's right because content beats code. Without good content, code is just an empty shell; the same goes for design.

You certainly can make an excellent site in Frontpage. Although you and I might be appalled by the code, the users will only care about the content.

It really depends on two things:
  • How much you care about this particular project
  • Your current ability for making standards-compliant, CSS-based websites
  • Whether you want to learn better methods while working on this project

Standards-compliant design has several important benefits, but it also takes some time to learn. In the long term, these benefits are definitely worthwhile:
  • Much faster to create and maintain websites
  • Smaller file sizes, so websites load quicker
  • Consistent rendering across multiple browsers -- past, present, and future!
  • Tends to be more accessible

In contrast, the old table-based design method has several serious disadvantages:
  • Code is bloated -- often 10 times larger than "table-less" HTML
  • It's time-consuming to change content or presentation
  • Major accessibility problems: table-based layouts rarely make sense when linearised, and therefore present monstrously confusing information to users of screen-readers
  • Tends to be bodged to look right in Internet Explorer X, but often breaks badly in any other browser (including Internet Explorer Y)

How confident are you with using CSS? If you already have the skills, then there's no question which method is better. But if you're only just learning CSS, then you must recognise that CSS-based design will take you longer than table-based design.

Here's an article that I wrote that might help you sort through the pros and cons.

I would love to get your collection of RSS feeds Mike because you certainly find some insanely apt web-design euphemisms in your reading smile.gif

Thank you everyone. I creeped into frontpage to see what it was like again because I havnt used it since my first site years ago. So I opened it and clicked on the code tab and I saw the first part of the document was <html> it didnt even have the doc type information at the top. It started with <html> and I was like wow. I know dreamweaver automatically does the doctype and I know some others that dont but they actually started with <html> of which I learned was a big no no.

3000 files! what the hell they been doing :S if you like i could find u some sources on css or even make u a template to mess about with ( thats how i lernt css ). i found the best way to lern css was to get a fully working css template that was up to standards ect and then copy everything down on my own page, then code it agen and agen in different ways without looking at the code. this way you learn how to fix things yourself. fair does i still need help some times but i normaly manage to fix it befor anyone answers lol its just a matter of having the time to mess about with this stuff.

anyway back to the original post i personaly think you should code it agen not only to get css stuck in your head but also so you know were things are in the code. try it n if u need any help PM me n ill have a look and see what is wrong. smile.gif

Dave.
