I've decided it's time to start building a portfolio site and the first thing I need is a logo. I've been messing around for a couple of hours trying to think of some sort of object to base the logo off of (animal, mountain, tree, etc.) but I can't think of anything original. So I'm trying for something even more basic.

The one thing I'm not sure about is if you can tell that the "J" is in fact a "J", rather than an "I". I need someone else's opinion. Do I scratch it and try something else or does this work?

I think if you're unsure whether it's clear then it will definately be less clear to someone who doesn't know anything about the company/logo/design.

Also you should stop stealing my initials.

Haha, nah I think the concept is good, very clean design.
It does look a bit too corporate for my liking, however that could be taken as a complaint or compliment depending entirely who your audience is.
You could als very easily remove the corporate image by simply changing the colour scheme.

I would swear that's an "I", not a "J".

The concept is good, I think you just need to tweak the "J". cherry.gif

Yeah that's my problem with it. At first glance I would expect it to be an architectural design firm or something. I'll hold on to it, but I want something cleaner / less bulky.

No you meant the I.

A J is only a J if it has the loop at the bottom. Without the loop it is an I. I thought the logo said IW Design. Looking at it after reading your comments I am certain it says IW Design.

Hey James,

I would say that this is a good start, it is "technically" sound-- clean, good colour combo.

But at the same time, it tells me nothing about you and your company. I would be hard pressed to tell the difference between this logo and one for a construction firm, as others have noted. To help get your logo look more like a designer and not corporate, I would say try these three things:

1. More colours in your palette, blue is very safe and that is why corporations use it. We are designers, let's do some interesting combinations that will help people remember us through colour-memory.
2. Maybe try to do something that is not as 2D. Multiple layers and a little "highlighting" (a la apple) could really bump this logo up.
3. Instead of just working with letters, throw in a drawn/illustrated element. Some graphic that will make my mind assosiate it with your name later on.

Great job and keep us posted.
-Andy

I first want to say im not expert on logos but from an outsider the first time I looked at it with no idea it was a "j" I thought it was an "I".
