I bought a paid web-hosting account for a website i used to run, but now i only have a personal website which i use to exprement with HTML/CSS, ect, so i have decided to switch back to free webhosting.
so does anyone here know any good free-webhost's that i can use? i don't mind a few ads on my page, as long as there aren't to many!

I've recently used these people...

http://www.free-space.net/

...and I like them. It's ad free, you can transfer your own domain name, or use a free one with them. Everything is quite intuitive and easy to use, and they have a forum on there also should you wish to use it (I haven't so I don't know how active it is).

Anyone know of any free ruby hosts?

I found this... http://xmgfree.com/plans.php

However the terms are a bit rigid and to be honest I just want to go at my own leasurely pace.

Why not just pay for hosting? I think basic hosting packages are so cheap nowadays that free services can't compete with them. Especially if you need one for personal usage so it doesn't need to be premium quality.

I peronally am looking for free hosting because I already have 2 hosting paid accounts. I really don't want to purchase a 3rd hosting account for a test server which only a handful of people will visit.

Yes, well I would say why pay for it, even if it's cheap, if in actual fact a free one can serve the purpose. I would always used paid for a "proper" site, but for personal or just somewhere to try stuff out, some free ones can do the job perfectly well - check out that one I linked to, I used their file uploading thing (technical word) and it is all very easy and quick. I will definitely use that one again.

I guess the free ones have changed since I last tried them. I've always thought that the < 30euros/year is definately worth the money to avoid all the hazzle with free hosts. I have to keep the one you Vanessa suggested in mind if I ever need one.

One solution is that you use one of your paid hosting plans for testing too, something like www.realpaidhosting.com/testing/. Wouldn't that work also? Or does it have to be a separate hosting account?
