Heya

I know that this page contains a list of compatible Mac and Windows fonts for web use, but I was wondering what personal preferences people have.

At the moment the company uses Verdana which is fine, but I feel like a change and the only 2 contenders that I can see are Tahoma and Trebuchet MS.

What does everyone else like and/or prefer?

Verdana, Tahoma and Trebuchet are the leading contenders. I find myself using tahoma alot lately for content text and Georgia for heading if it suits the site.

I like Helvetica right now.

To be honest, any readable font bar times and you can't go to far wrong.

Trebuchet is my favorite if it's a women's-targeted site.
Arial, Tahoma or Verdana are all fine for business in my opinion.
I love helvetica too!

I'm using Windows Vista and I can't seem to find Helvetica! Should it have been "bundled" as it were with the OS, or is one that should be bought separately? I've tried for over 5 mins to load fonts.com, but it just won't load for me. Is anyone else having the same problem with this site?

Oh wow, that's really interesting! My personal favourite is Trebuchet! Why do you think women prefer it?

Another stupid question, but are Open Type STD fonts compatible with Mac and Windows?

fonts.com is loading for me...

I just think trebuchet is such a slender font, it works really well for more feminine looks. It's not to say it's it can't be used for all sites, but I find it works especially well when you are targetting women.
Personal opion of course.

I know open type fonts can be used in Windows but I don't know if they can be used on a Mac.

That's the one that the marketing team decided on too. For now, until they change their minds... again!

Tend to use what ever is suiting the style really. Usually try the majority out until im happy. Trebuchet is nice though. Must use that sometime soon. Not sure if i have yet.

Helvetica for me too. It's my company font as well. Helvetica Neue is such a gorgeous piece of font-goodness.

Ok, but which fonts are supported by every platform?

Certain fonts enjoy excellent support, but none have universal support. See these font statistics.

For real text (not images of text), you should choose fonts that enjoy good support. But you should also specify a generic fall-back as the last option. For example:

CODE
font-family: Verdana, Geneva, Arial, sans-serif;

Here Verdana will be the first choice; next, Geneva; next, Arial; and finally, the browser will use the default system sans-serif font.

There are five generic font families:
  • serif
  • sans-serif
  • cursive
  • fantasy
  • monospace
See the W3C explanation of generic font families.
